Wood beads come in a wide variety of shapes, colors, sizes and styles. When used in jewelry-making, wood beads provide a warm and organic feel to any piece. They are extremely versatile and can be mixed with other types of beads.
Let’s take a closer look at the different types of wood that are used to make beads and jewelry.
Bayong
Bayong comes from a tree found in the Philippines. It is a hardwood with a visible wood pattern. Bayong beads have a rich, warm color that ranges from lighter to darker brown with some reddish tones. Our beads come in a variety of shapes that include round, pucalet or wheel, and saucer.
Greywood
Greywood beads do not necessarily refer to one type of tree; instead, they refer to grey-colored wood that comes from several different types of trees. The grey coloring in these beads is fairly subtle, almost as if a smoky grey has been blended with brown. Our round greywood beads come in several sizes and are very lightweight and smooth.
Jackfruit
Jackfruit is also sometimes called nangka. The jackfruit tree is native to India, southeast Asia, and other tropical lowlands. Did you know that the jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit? It can weigh as much as 80 pounds! In addition to its use for beads, jackfruit tree wood is also used for construction, furniture, and musical instruments like drums. Jackfruit beads have a beautiful yellow-orange color that some might describe as golden brown.

Palmwood
Similar to greywood, the wood used for palmwood beads can come from a variety of species of palm trees. Some types of palm trees include coconut and date. Palmwood beads can range from light to dark brown in color and have darker markings on them. These unique markings sometimes look like spots, and other times look like stripes.
Patikan
Patikan is one specific type of palmwood. It comes from a tree that is native to the Philippines. Patikan beads are a darker type of palmwood. Interestingly, darker beads indicate that they were made from an older tree. Patikan beads also have the spotting and striping typical of other types of palmwood.
Robles
Robles beads are made from a tree found in the rainforest. It is a hardwood that is strong but is also lightweight. Many people compare robles to teak. You can see the wood grain in robles beads, and our beads range from light to dark brown. Some people even consider light-colored robles beads to have almost a pink hue to them.
Rosewood
Rosewood beads come from a tree that is found in the Philippines. These hardwood beads have a very pale brown coloring to them. Similar to robles, some rosewood beads can appear pink in color. Because of their pale color, the wood grain is also visible in rosewood.
