China recorded the fewest serious mining accidents in any first quarter over the past decade, according to the National Mine Safety Administration’s recent quarterly press briefing.

Data from the first quarter of 2025 shows that the overall safety situation in the mining sector remained stable. The total number of mining accidents fell by 3.7% compared to the same period last year, while fatalities dropped by 29.3%. The number of serious accidents — those involving multiple deaths or significant casualties — declined by 66.7%, and deaths from those incidents dropped by 84.2% year-on-year.

Officials attributed the improvement to a continued focus on strengthening safety fundamentals and prioritizing risk prevention as a key strategy in mine oversight.
