By the end of 2024, China’s biomass power generation capacity is set to reach 45.99 million kW, with an output of 208.3 billion kWh. Biomass heating will provide approximately 500 million gigajoules of energy, and biomethane production is expected to hit 500 million cubic meters. Significant progress has also been made in the development of biodiesel, bioethanol, biomethanol, and sustainable aviation fuel. This was shared by Yu Tong, President of the China Industrial Development Promotion Association, at the 2025 Biomass Energy Innovation Forum.
Yu emphasized that biomass energy is a renewable, zero-carbon resource that is abundant and versatile, available in solid, liquid, and gas forms. It offers an ideal substitute for fossil fuels and is increasingly recognized as a key player in producing green methanol fuel from green hydrogen. This marks a new frontier for biomass energy, especially in low-carbon transportation fuels.
Cheng Huqiang, Director of the Environmental Protection Department at the National Development and Reform Commission, highlighted that the global energy landscape is rapidly evolving, with a green, low-carbon shift becoming inevitable. Biomass energy’s role in this transformation is crucial, offering zero-carbon, cyclical ecological benefits that are essential for China’s carbon peak and neutrality targets. Given its vast potential, biomass can help drive energy conservation, reduce emissions, promote resource recycling, and enhance energy security.
The 2025 China Biomass Industry Development Report also forecasts that in the next five years, the sector will be driven by technological advances that boost efficiency, diversify application scenarios, and create stronger synergies between policy and market dynamics. The report underscores the importance of green finance and improved standards to unlock more environmental and societal value.
