How to buy the iridescent acrylic sheet - HSQY plastic group

A good acrylic sheet determines the quality of the iridescent acrylic sheet, and if you choose an inferior acrylic sheet, there will be many inferior products. This is directly related to the choice of acrylic materials. Here are a few ways to judge the quality of acrylic:

You will get efficient and thoughtful service from XISHUN Acrylic.

First, the observation method is a method of judging according to the material characteristics of acrylic itself: when we buy acrylic, we can see whether the iridescent acrylic sheet is slightly discolored or has a low gloss, if it exists, it means the acrylic is of poor quality. In addition to this observation can also see whether the acrylic material and the actual situation of acrylic material is consistent, if not consistent can also judge the acrylic material is irregular.

Second, the combustion method can be used with a very small piece of acrylic combustion test, if the iridescent acrylic sheet burning up at once that acrylic quality is not good.

Three, the paste method also called the hot melt method, is the use of good acrylic materials and bad acrylic materials are not have the same degree of adhesion and difference. For example, a poor-quality iridescent acrylic sheet will stick together after a hot melt and will be difficult to separate, while a good-quality acrylic sheet will be easy to separate.

Iridescent Acrylic Sheet - Andisco Fabrication&Coating

Cause: Achieved through a specialized micro-thin, multi-layer optical coating applied to one or both surfaces of a clear or translucent acrylic base sheet.

Mechanism: This coating creates light interference. As light waves reflect off the different layers within the coating, they interfere with each other constructively and destructively at different wavelengths (colors) depending on the angle of incidence and viewing angle. This selectively amplifies certain colors while canceling others, creating the shifting rainbow effect.

Not Pearlescent/Metallic: It's distinct from pearlescent (soft sheen like pearls) or metallic (sparkly flakes) finishes, which rely on embedded pigments.

Protective Film: Sheets usually come with protective film on both sides. Leave this film ON during all cutting, machining, and handling to prevent scratches on the delicate coating and the acrylic surface.

Cutting: Can be cut with laser cutters (see CRITICAL SAFETY NOTE below), CNC routers, saws (circular, jig, band), or scored and snapped (for thinner sheets). Ensure the protective film is intact.

Bending/Thermoforming: Can be heated and bent. Take care to avoid overheating and bubbling/delaminating the coating. Test on scraps first.

Polishing & Finishing: Edge polishing works as with standard acrylic. Do not sand or polish the coated surface, as this will destroy the iridescent effect. Clean only with mild soap and water or acrylic-specific cleaners; avoid harsh solvents.

Adhesives: Use solvent cements designed for acrylic (e.g., Weld-On 3, 4, 16) for strong, clear bonds. Apply carefully to avoid getting cement on the coated surface. Pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesives (PSA) are also an option.

DO NOT laser cut iridescent acrylic coated with metal-based optical coatings (which many are). Vaporizing metal coatings releases highly toxic fumes (like metal oxides) that are extremely hazardous to breathe and can severely damage laser equipment.

Verify Coating Type: Always check with the manufacturer/supplier if a specific iridescent sheet is safe for laser cutting. Some manufacturers offer laser-safe versions with non-metallic coatings.

Alternatives: If laser cutting is essential, consider:

Using laser-safe iridescent film applied to standard laser-cut acrylic after cutting.

Cutting uncoated acrylic and then applying the iridescent film.

Using alternative fabrication methods (CNC routing, sawing).

Cost: Significantly more expensive than standard colored or clear acrylic sheets.

Coating Delicacy: The iridescent coating is thin and requires careful handling, fabrication (leave film ON!), and cleaning (avoid abrasives, harsh chemicals) to prevent scratches or damage. Cannot be refinished if scratched.

Laser Cutting Hazard: CRITICAL: Many metallic coatings produce highly toxic fumes when laser cut. Always verify laser safety with the supplier/manufacturer before attempting. Use laser-safe alternatives or different fabrication methods if needed.

UV Stability of Coating: While generally good, intense, prolonged direct sunlight can potentially degrade the color-shift effect on some products over many years. Specify UV-stable grades for critical outdoor applications.
