But the big question is—is it as durable as traditional stainless steel? In this blog post, we’ll explore the reality behind colored stainless steel and whether it can stand the test of time. Get ready to uncover the truth about metallic finishes and discover if colored stainless steel is built to last!
While regular stainless steel is known for its classic silver appearance, colored stainless steel comes in a variety of shades, such as gold, bronze, and black. These colors are achieved by adding a pigment to the surface of the metal. Beyond aesthetics, the color also serves a practical purpose, helping to hide fingerprints and smudges.
Colored stainless steel offers a unique alternative to standard stainless steel, providing a modern and distinctive look for spaces. Like its traditional counterpart, it is durable and easy to clean.
However, it's important to note that the color can fade over time with prolonged exposure to sunlight or harsh cleaning products. To ensure a longer-lasting finish, opting for darker colors may be a better choice.
Colored stainless steel offers several advantages over traditional stainless steel, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics. Here are some key benefits:
Increased Aesthetics: Colored stainless steel can dramatically enhance the visual appeal of any space. Whether you want to add a vibrant touch to your kitchen or make your construction projects stand out, the diverse color options available can help you achieve the desired look.
Improved Durability: Beyond its attractive appearance, colored stainless steel is more durable than standard stainless steel. The color coating provides excellent resistance to fingerprints and scratches, ensuring that it maintains its appearance even in high-traffic areas. This makes it a popular choice for environments with heavy use, such as elevators and escalators.
Enhanced Safety: Colored stainless steel can also improve safety in your home or business. Lighter colors can make potential hazards more visible in low-light conditions, while darker colors are less likely to show dirt and grime, making maintenance easier.
Increased Value: Using colored stainless steel can boost the value of your property. Its unique appearance can attract potential buyers and enhance the overall appeal of your space. In commercial settings, such as shopping malls, its distinctive look can also draw more visitors and set your business apart from the competition.
Colored stainless steel sheets matches the durability of regular stainless steel, with some added advantages. For example, it is less prone to showing fingerprints and smudges compared to its uncolored counterpart. Black stainless steel, in particular, is better at concealing scratches than lighter-colored stainless steel, making it an excellent choice for high-traffic areas where wear resistance is a priority.
The coloring process does not compromise the metal's strength or durability. The primary distinction between colored and regular stainless steel lies in their appearance. The corrosion resistance of colored stainless steel remains on par with that of regular stainless steel, as the coloring process does not affect its resistance to rust and corrosion.

To achieve its color, a titanium film is added to the surface of regular stainless steel, enhancing its resistance to fingerprints and scratches. This ensures that colored stainless steel is as safe and durable as its uncolored variant.
To keep your colored stainless steel looking its best, follow these care tips:
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of strong chemicals and abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the colored finish. Instead, use mild soap and water or a gentle all-purpose cleaner.
- Prevent Scratches: Use a soft cloth or sponge to clean or wipe down the surface. Avoid scrubbing too hard to prevent scratching the finish.
- Skip Metal Polishes and Waxes: Do not use metal polishes or waxes on colored stainless steel, as these can damage the protective coating.
By following these guidelines, your colored stainless steel will maintain its vibrant appearance and durability for years to come!
Colored stainless steel is an excellent material, renowned for its durability and aesthetic appeal. It offers the same resilience as traditional stainless steel while providing a more visually striking appearance. Ideal for projects that demand stylish design, colored stainless steel combines practicality with elegance. With proper care and maintenance, you can expect your colored stainless steel to remain beautiful and functional for years to come.
All of our coloured cutlery is safe and 100% metal – just like our classic silver sets! We use a special colouring process that is non-toxic, and will not peel or chip over time, like other coloured products on the market.
Our entire line of flatware is made from high-grade stainless steel, but our coloured items undergo an extra step in the manufacturing process which allows the colour to occur naturally in the metal. The process, called physical vapour deposition (PVD) involves a layer of titanium molecules blended into the surface of the stainless steel, resulting in a shiny and colourful finish.
Titanium, like stainless steel, is inert and safe. In addition to the colourful and shiny finish, the PVD process also enhances the surface hardness and helps prevent corrosion. The result is flatware that is strong, durable, functional, food-safe, tasteless, hypoallergenic, and fun! The finish will not peel or rub off, and if cared for properly, the colours should not fade. (Please read about caring for your products here.)
In addition, our coloured flatware will not bend or rust, is heat-resistant, oxidation-resistant, and dishwasher safe.
Importantly, the PVD process is eco-friendly and it does not produce toxic run-off into the ecosystem (unlike many other colouring processes).
