Where do you guys buy your blast media? - The Garage Journal

Looking for glas BEADS. Can't seem to find it at any of the stores...I've got a course and medium coal slag from tractor supply, but that stuff is ripping up the aluminum.

Do you guys order online? What have you had the best results for blasting aluminum? gg,
I get mine through the warehouse that I buy engine parts from. I tried the tractor supply glass beads once when I ran out but ended up throwing the bucket away, it was useless.

You didn't put your location in your profile but most automotive machine shops use glass beads to clean aluminum heads. If you have one close by ask them where they get theirs. We have a local compressor parts & supply as well as new sales store here and they carry several types of blasting media that is very reasonable. I can get a 50 pound bag of crushed glass for $18.50 and use half at a time. A bag will generally last me about a year, give or take.

Did you ask your local TSC if they can order you glass bead ? I believe the last container I bought was from them.

When I powdercoated I used a mix of AL oxide and glass bead. You can get it from TP or Grainger. Grainger was the best for me as I got free shipping & 10% off due to my insurance co.

I had heard that many years ago as well but in nearly 3 decades now of building aluminum motorcycle engine, snowmobile engines and VW engines/transmissions and blasting cylinders/cases I never have had an issue. Many of my parts once the machining was done, I would wipe down with Wax & Grease remover, then spray with epoxy primer and then automotive base coat/clear coat paint and never had an issue with glass beads causing any issues what so ever. The only issues I had to contend with was the natural characteristics of aluminum that once it is cleaned it immediately starts to corrode again. I would go from blasting cabinet, clean and wipe down then immediately to epoxy priming stage. Let is sit overnight and cure then paint and clear coat.

Yes.........Safety is for sissies........

Not to mention OP is looking for a gentle media. Grainger had glass beads at a good price and available for pickup.

Thanks for posting that! I wasn't aware that this was such a big deal. Back in the s when I was in high school, I rented a 175cfm industrial compressor and 500lb. sand pot and blasted all of the body and frame parts from my Chevrolet, going through lb. of sand in my back yard. I wore a body shop respirator, but that dust got everwhere (still some probably hiding inside some of my tools, since like a dummy I left my toolbox out in the backyard laying open). Lungs are still good AFAIK. Thanks guys. All the reviews I read about TS and HF blast media tells me it is the crushed glass, not bead. That's kinda why I posted this. Was hoping someone would say XXXX carries it on the reg.

Looks like, I'll have to do some recon.
