  • Fuel consumptions of developed and standard cycles were estimated and compared.

Abstract

Driving cycle offers a comprehensive understanding of operational features throughout the waste collection and transportation (C&T) process, which is critical for optimizing waste management aiming at reducing energy use and environmental pollution. In this study, the Micro-trip method, combined with principal component and cluster analysis, was adopted to divide the C&T process into five operational phases. Considering diverse waste types and C&T modes, four driving cycles were synthesized for garbage trucks. The average speeds of garbage truck cycles are considerably lower, coupled with prolonged idle durations, marking a substantial deviation from standard cycles. Additionally, the OpMode-bin method was employed to estimate fuel consumption for both garbage truck cycles and standard cycles. The results reveal that using standard cycles generally results in an underestimation of fuel consumption by 20 % to 30 %, which highlights the necessity of developing specific driving cycles to ensure accurate fuel use and emission quantification for garbage trucks.

Introduction

The management of municipal solid waste (MSW) poses a great challenge to the sustainable development of cities, especially the energy consumption and environmental pollution concerns (Hua et al., , Heidari et al., , Mohsenizadeh et al., ). Along the entire chain of MSW management, waste collection and transportation (C&T) accounts for a substantial portion of the overall expenditures (Quintili and Castellani, ), and over 80 % of energy consumption is attributed to this process (Nabavi-Pelesaraei et al., ). Additionally, garbage trucks produce high amounts of tailpipe emissions and noise pollution within neighborhoods, and yield considerable energy-related greenhouse gas emissions (Toller et al., , Sutthasil et al., ). Nevertheless, due to the scarcity of fundamental data pertaining to the waste C&T process, energy consumption and emissions in current lifecycle studies of MSW management are often treated as distance-related variables, neglecting the impact of vehicle driving status (Mamashli and Javadian, , Zhou et al., ). This oversight hinders the precise quantification of the economic and environmental impacts across the entire MSW management chain. Hence, depicting the driving characteristics of garbage trucks throughout the waste C&T process is crucial for optimizing MSW management practices to reduce energy usage and environmental pollution. The driving cycle, which comprises a time series of vehicle speeds reflecting real-world driving patterns for specific vehicle types, emerges as a valuable tool. It aids in characterizing vehicle’s driving features and quantifying their energy consumption and pollutant emissions (Achour and Olabi, , Lin and Niemeier, ).Moreover, the driving cycle is also a vital foundation of vehicle design, simulation, performance testing, and control strategy formulation (Bender et al., , Ye et al., ). However, existing driving cycles primarily concentrate on conventional vehicles or transit buses (Mongkonlerdmanee and Koetniyom, , Tong and Ng, a), while garbage trucks have received less attention. Due to the lack of exclusive driving cycles tailored for garbage trucks, their testing had to rely on the standard cycles established for ordinary heavy-duty trucks (HTs). However, garbage trucks, as specialized vehicles, undergo distinct driving stages during their operation, including trash collection, transport, and return, which are not encountered by ordinary vehicles (Farzaneh et al., ). Consequently, this reliance on generic cycles of HTs for garbage trucks would lead to significant errors in the outcomes of related research such as garbage truck design and optimization, testing and certification, fuel consumption and emission estimation, and so on (Bender et al., , Giechaskiel et al., , Mafi et al., ). Therefore, it is imperative to develop and adopt driving cycles that are specifically designed for garbage trucks. In light of this, this study collected operational data from garbage vehicles engaged in different waste types and C&T modes in Xi'an, and analyzed their typical driving and fuel consumption characteristics. Specifically, the main contributions of this research are embodied in threefold: (1) the representative driving cycles tailored for garbage trucks were established by taking into account their actual working process; (2) the driving features of garbage vehicles were analyzed under different C&T modes, as well as various operational phases; and (3) the fuel consumption differences between garbage truck cycles and standard cycles were assessed, and the fuel consumption characteristics of garbage vehicles during different operational phases were also compared. The results will provide methodological support for the planning of waste C&T systems and the designing of specialized garbage vehicles.

Literature review

To grasp vehicle’s operating features, current research has developed various driving cycles around the world. Besides official standard test cycles, a large number of studies have focused on creating regular driving cycles to represent the traffic characteristics of entire road network. For vehicles with specific purposes, their driving conditions differ significantly from those of conventional vehicles due to their unique operating regions and usage scenarios. Currently, there is limited

Materials and methods

As one well-accepted approach, the MT method entails several key steps: data collection, data division, characteristic parameters extraction, micro-trips selection and cycle synthesis. Detailed explanations of each individual step are outlined below.

Driving cycle construction and validation

The driving cycles derived for four types of garbage trucks are depicted in Fig. 3. Notably, the resultant cycle durations of DC-DTF, DC-DTR, DC-CR, and DC-TR are  s,  s,  s, and  s, respectively. Giraldo et al. () analyzed the impact of varying driving cycle durations on their representativeness and concluded that the driving cycle must last at least  s to ensure adequate representation. All driving cycles developed in this study meet this criterion. Both DC-DTF and

Conclusions

Using real-world driving data collected from garbage trucks in Xi’an, China, this study divide the C&T process into five distinct operational phases through cluster analysis. Based on this classification, four representative driving cycles were created accounting for different waste types and C&T modes, which are DC-DTF, DC-DTR, DC-CR, and DC-TR. Specifically, DC-DTF encompasses five operational phases that capture the driving patterns of food waste (FW) trucks throughout the entire waste C&T

On April 25, , we celebrate that NNPC and POWERSTAR TRUCKS have customized 220 45,000L fuel semi-trailers to help Nigeria upgrade its energy infrastructure.   The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) recently reached a strategic cooperation with POWERSTAR TRUCKS, a well-known Chinese special vehicle manufacturer, to purchase 220 45,000-liter fuel semi-trailers at one time. This large order is not only the fourth time that NNPC has chosen this Chinese brand in recent years, but also marks that China-Nigeria energy equipment cooperation has entered a new stage of scale and customization.   As Africa's largest crude oil producer, Nigeria's energy transportation network faces two major challenges: the high requirements of tropical climate for equipment corrosion resistance, and the complex road conditions of only 20% of the nearly 200,000 kilometers of roads in the country are hardened roads. POWERSTAR TRUCKS has specifically upgraded the configuration of this batch of semi-trailers - using high-strength aluminum alloy tanks to reduce their own weight while improving their resistance to moisture and heat, equipped with a reinforced suspension system to adapt to rugged terrain, and equipped with an anti-static system to ensure transportation safety in high temperature environments. This deep adaptation of "Chinese technology + African scenarios" is the key factor for NNPC's continued repurchase.       2. The strategic value of 220 tankers: an accelerator for NNPC's energy independence process Filling the capacity gap: Nigeria's average daily fuel consumption exceeds 40 million liters, but the existing transport vehicles are seriously aging. This batch of new vehicles will increase NNPC's fuel distribution efficiency by about 18%, increase annual transportation capacity by 3.6 billion liters, and basically cover the oil demand of economic centers such as Lagos and Kano. Reduce operating costs: Compared with similar European products, the procurement cost of Chinese-made tankers is reduced by 25%, and the localized after-sales service network can shorten the fault response time to within 48 hours. New energy transition layout: The vehicle has reserved LNG/hydrogen energy modification interfaces to provide hardware support for NNPC's future energy structure transformation.   Mele Kyari, CEO of NNPC, specifically pointed out: "This batch of equipment will directly serve our '200,000-ton strategic oil depot plan' and is the core guarantee for extending the national fuel reserve cycle from 15 days to 30 days by ."               Powerstar Series liquid tank is a new high standard light weight tankers made of stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum alloy. The tank models include oil tanker, chemical liquid carrier, flammable liquid carrier, food carrier. Referred Europe FFB and the United States the HEIL style, and combined with the domestic market demand, the tank was re-designed based on finite element analysis. Efficient compression and improved carrying capacity: The core advantage of Isuzu ELF garbage rear loader lies in its efficient garbage compression system. By strongly compressing the garbage through hydraulic or mechanical devices, the volume of garbage can be greatly reduced, so that more garbage can be loaded in the same transportation, which improves transportation efficiency. This feature not only reduces the number of garbage transfers and reduces operating costs, but also effectively alleviates the pressure of urban garbage disposal and promotes the rational use of resources. In addition, the compression process can effectively reduce the generation of garbage leachate and reduce the risk of secondary pollution.       2. Good sealing and reduced environmental pollution: Isuzu rear loader compactor truck focuses on sealing performance in design to ensure that garbage will not scatter or leak during garbage collection, compression and transportation, effectively avoiding secondary pollution of the environment by garbage. The sealing structure and automatic locking device of the vehicle body can maintain a good sealing state even during driving, protecting the cleanliness of urban roads and improving the image of the city.       3. Easy to operate and strong adaptability: Isuzu ELF garbage rear loader adopts an advanced automatic control system, which is easy and flexible to operate. The driver only needs to complete a series of operations such as garbage loading, compression and unloading through the control panel, which greatly reduce...
